Carl B Lott

Carl B. Lott, Ed.D., is a highly talented percussionist and educator with over 42 years of experience as a full-time musician and extensive involvement in the music industry. He is an active, longtime member of both the Los Angeles Professional Musicians Association and the Houston Professional Musicians Association as a member in good standing within the American Federation of Musicians. Dr. Lott’s career is a result of a combination of performance, activity, education, and mentoring. He has played and recorded with some of the greatest names in jazz, soul music, and pop music throughout his career, including Gerald Wilson, Bobby Bryant, Johnny Guitar Watson, Della Reese, and Phillipe Le Jeune. He has a large discography, which includes some influential records, such as Everywhere (1967), Eternal Equinox (1969), and California Soul (1970). He has participated in a wide variety of live performances, revues, and festivals, ranging from the Corpus Christi Jazz Festival to the Houston Jazz Festival, as well as more substantial venues such as Las Vegas’ Cotton Club Revue, Los Angeles’ Ebony Fashion Fair, and European jazz stages. He shared stages with some illustrious singers like June Christi, Nina Simone, Carmen McRae, Marion Cowling, and Jewel Brown. Just as dedicated to lifelong learning is Dr. Lott, who has directed drum clinics and master classes at Texas Southern University, St. James Church in Houston, and Henry’s Music Store in Los Angeles. He also played in Live and Swinging at Marty’s on the Hill. He is a graduate with an Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration (1993), as well as an M.S. in Industrial Technology (1977) and a B.S. in Building Construction (1973). His preprofessional training included studying with Herbert Brochstein and Joe Raynard privately, as well as participating in the legendary Kashmere Gardens Stage Band, led by Prof. Conrad Johnson. Besides his compositions as an educator and musician, Dr. Lott serves as a band director and performs regularly at large venues, including 68 The Houston Club, River Oaks Country Club, The Doctor’s Club, and The Petroleum Club, as a sideman in the Charlie Prausie Trio, led by Charlie Prausie. He had also led his own group prior to this engagement. A polymath and staunchly respected figure in the musical world, Carl B. Lott is a lifelong advocate for musical standards, mentorship, and the preservation of jazz and the performing arts.
